History informs us that the town of Cyrene was founded in 631 B.C by emigrants from the crowded island of Thera when they were commanded by the oracle at Delphi to seek a new home in North Africa. Cyrene became one of the greatest intellectual and artistic centers of the Greek world, famous for its medical school, learned academics, and architecture, which included some of the finest examples of the Hellenistic style.
