Geography Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa with 1.760.000 km² of mainly desert. Libya has approximately 5 millions of inhabitants. Arab is the official language of the country; English and Italian are widely
spoken. Libya’s climate is affected by the Sahara on one hand and by the Mediterranean
Sea on the other. Generally the coastline is hot in the Summer and fresh and rainy
in the Winter. In the south, weather can be extremely hot in Summer (till 45°) and
pleasant in Winter times, but beware of the very cold winter nights in the desert
(max 18° - min 3°). salads. Big hotels serve international cuisine. Libya being a hot country, we strongly recommend to wear head covers to avoid
sun strikes. We also suggest moderate conservative clothing for the ladies (preferably clothes
covering the upper legs and the shoulders). In the souks, one can find the typical Arabic products like local carpets (the
most famous is the Misurata carpet), silver products, multicoloured hand made Ghadames
sandals and other varieties of local products. CET + one hour and GMT + two hours. Attention: Libya does not change to day light saving time. None are needed. 220V; Continental European or English plugs. It is advisable to carry an adapter
for clients coming from countries with other specifications. The Dinar is the local currency. 1EUR = 1,72 Dinar (estimation year 2010). Taking photos is allowed in all archaeological sites and museums. A fee of 4
EUR is charged for cameras and 7 EUR for videos. Government Buildings, Military sites and officers are not allowed to be photographed.
Libya observes all the Muslim festivities. The dates of these festivities depend
on the lunar calendar and differ from one year to another when it comes to the solar
(European) calendar. The public holidays in Libya are: The 01 September: Libyan national day. The 02 March: Declaration of the Jamahiriya. The 11 June: Evacuation of the American military presence. The 28 March: Evacuation of the English military presence. The 07 October: Evacuation of the Italian military presence. The 26 October: National morning day, commemorating the Libyan deported
people (national and international flights are cancelled or delayed, borders and
maritime ports are closed, international telephone lines are interrupted). The 14 April: anniversary of the Tripoli and Benghazi bombing by the Americans.
