Food

Typical local dishes include couscous, tajines, grilled fish, lamb cutlets and salads. Big hotels serve international cuisine.

Clothes

Libya being a hot country, we strongly recommend to wear head covers to avoid sun strikes.
We also suggest moderate conservative clothing for the ladies (preferably clothes covering the upper legs and the shoulders).

Shopping

In the souks, one can find the typical Arabic products like local carpets (the most famous is the Misurata carpet), silver products, multicoloured hand made Ghadames sandals and other varieties of local products.

Time

CET + one hour and GMT + two hours.
Attention: Libya does not change to day light saving time.

Vaccinations

None are needed.

Electricity

220V; Continental European or English plugs. It is advisable to carry an adapter for clients coming from countries with other specifications.

Currency

The Dinar is the local currency. 1EUR = 1,72 Dinar (estimation year 2010).

Photography

Taking photos is allowed in all archaeological sites and museums. A fee of 4 EUR is charged for cameras and 7 EUR for videos.
Government Buildings, Military sites and officers are not allowed to be photographed.

Holidays

Libya observes all the Muslim festivities. The dates of these festivities depend on the lunar calendar and differ from one year to another when it comes to the solar (European) calendar. The public holidays in Libya are:

The 01 September: Libyan national day.
The 02 March: Declaration of the Jamahiriya.
The 11 June: Evacuation of the American military presence.
The 28 March: Evacuation of the English military presence.
The 07 October: Evacuation of the Italian military presence.
The 26 October: National morning day, commemorating the Libyan deported people (national and international flights are cancelled or delayed, borders and maritime ports are closed, international telephone lines are interrupted).
The 14 April: anniversary of the Tripoli and Benghazi bombing by the Americans.
